  • Timer, one for every two Cub Scouts
  • Orange safety cone
  • Projections Recording Sheet from requirement 1
  • 8 ½” x 11” paper, one for each Cub Scout
  • Pencils, one for each Cub Scout
  • Rubber bands, number of rubber bands per lap * number of Cub Scouts

Before the meeting:

  1. Determine how long 2 miles is in your meeting space. Mark the 2-mile route with an orange safety cone. Note: Requirement 1 of Math on the Trail Adventure had you set up ¼ mile track. Using this same track is encouraged. Calculate how many laps are needed to complete 2 miles on the indoor track.
  2. Calculate the number of rubber bands needed to complete the 2 miles.

During the meeting:

  1. Review the Projected Time the Cub Scouts completed in requirement 1. Explain that today Cub Scouts are going to see how close our estimate was to the actual time.
  2. Show Cub Scouts what 2 miles looks like on the indoor created track.
  3. Walkers will keep track of their laps. Explain to Cub Scouts that each time they complete a lap, an adult or the den chief will place a rubber band on their wrist. When they have “x” number of rubber bands, they will have completed 2 miles.
  4. Assign an adult or a den chief person to be the timekeeper.
  5. Walk the 2 miles. Remind Cub Scouts, that this is not a race, they are walking to get a pace to see if our prediction from requirement 1. is correct. Adding any Cub Scout Pizzazz is encouraged: walking music, theme, celebration during each lap, singing songs during walking (Songbook), etc.
  6. Record the time it took Cub Scouts to walk 2 miles. Save this information, the Cub Scout will need it for requirement 3
