The Scouts BSA program is a source of inspiration for countless individuals who have dedicated themselves to the values it embodies. It is easy to assume that our years of involvement have made us experts, leaving us with nothing new to learn. As commissioners our calling is distinct—to be the foremost wellspring of support and guidance for our Troops. Achieving this lofty goal necessitates a spirit of perpetual learning and an openness to embracing latest ideas. To help you support this, I will delve into the concrete suggested resources commissioners can use to elevate themselves into the single most indispensable resource for Scouts BSA leaders.

Stay Informed Online: In today’s digital age, staying connected is easier than ever. Start by following the Scouts BSA Facebook page, where you can glean valuable insights, engage in discussions, and keep tabs on the latest news and developments. Joining relevant online forums and groups like our commissioner’s groups where you can connect with others and bounce ideas.

Scouting.org: The official Scouting website is a treasure trove of information for commissioners. It host the new Merit Badge Hub, where you can find the most-up-to-date requirement and resources. Regularly check for updates in the Program Updates section, as it provides crucial information about requirement changes, best practices, rank advancements, and other program updates. And also familiarize yourself with the Troops Resources page as it contains the very important Guide to Advancement, guidance on training, and other troop planning resources. Being well-versed in these changes allows you to offer accurate guidance to Troops.

Read “Aaron on Scouting”: The official blog of Scouting Magazine, offers valuable insights into the latest trends, news, and developments in Scouting. Make it a habit to read these blog posts as these can be inspiring containing stories on how Scouting makes an impact on our communities and keeps you informed of upcoming events, opportunities, and other resources that can be valuable to the troops you serve.

Tune into the monthly #TroopTalkLive: The second Wednesday of each month at 2pm CT watch the latest #TroopTalkLive. You can join in and ask questions about the topic of the month via Facebook Live or YouTube. Past discussions have included the new Merit Badge hub, the Scouts BSA Youth Council, the Scouts BSA uniform, and more. Engaging with this resource fosters continuous learning and allows you to tap into a collective wellspring of the latest knowledge.

Being the ultimate resource for Scouts BSA leaders is a dynamic journey of continuous learning and adaptation. By using the suggested resources, commissioners can stay informed, connected, and well-equipped to guide and support Troops effectively. Remember that the Scouts BSA program is not static; it evolves to meet the needs of today’s youth.
