Executive Vice President, Membership Engagement and Assistant Chief Scout Executive (ACSE)
Position Overview
We’re seeking a dynamic and experienced leadership professional to join our executive management team as Executive Vice President, Membership Engagement and Assistant Chief Scout Executive (ACSE).
The Executive Vice President, Membership Engagement and ACSE will collaborate closely with Scouting leaders, staff and volunteers across the country, marshalling talent and energy toward growing the membership of scouting and thoughtfully engaging alumni. This executive will lead the recruitment and retention strategy of scouts and will work closely with the councils, parents, schools, and community organizations nationally to promote the variety of exciting scouting programs. They will also be responsible for keeping Scouts engaged over their lifetimes as volunteers, advocates, role models, and contributors/fundraisers. The EVP will also be responsible for financial oversight related to membership initiatives, including budgeting and performance monitoring. This position reports to the Chief Scout Executive, President and CEO.
Responsibilities
- Serve as chief architect to design, implement, monitor, and manage strategic initiatives to support scout recruitment and retention, using innovative best-in-class practices and discipline.
- Assess internal and external mechanisms to aid the organization in developing a robust and results-driven membership growth strategy.
- Meet financial objectives by forecasting annual sales quotes, developing an annual budget, analyzing trends, and monitoring cost and performance.
- Collaborate with colleagues to create compelling campaigns and engaging outreach approaches to be employed nationally.
- Specifically engage with youth-serving executives in the local Councils to drive youth engagement leading to robust unit and membership growth.
- Develop strong relationships with the local scouting Councils, alumni, parents, teachers, volunteers, and other key business and community constituents across the US to foster excitement around today’s Scouting programs.
- Support these stakeholders in efforts to increase membership, alumni engagement, and impact.
- Develop appropriate leadership training to enhance the membership experience and aid in recruiting and retention.
- Work collaboratively with members of the regional executive leadership team to enhance Scouting’s refreshed brand identity among parents and leaders of community, school, and religious institutions.
- Lead the National Eagle Scout Association, the BSA Alumni Association (potential 20 million members), and the Order of the Arrow (BSA Honorary Society).
- Inspire, lead, and engage a wide and diverse network of volunteers and staff, as a partner and a champion for members and alumni.

- Earn the trust and respect of Scouting’s internal and external stakeholders, in the regions and across the Scouting enterprise. Work in a truly collaborative fashion with National, Regional and local Scouting organizations.
- Develop a comprehensive strategy and action plan to grow and diversify Scouting’s membership and achieve appropriate and timely outcomes and success in the implementation of the early stages of the plan. Build campaign plans for Spring and Fall recruiting. Establish material to support community/school outreach programs to engage/reengage youth “where they are.”
- Ensure mechanisms are in place to measure results and continuously improve approaches and processes. Strive to reach new cohorts of youth in America.

Education
- Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field such as business administration, non-profit management, marketing, or a related field from an accredited college or university.
Preferences: Master’s degree in a relevant field such as business administration, non-profit management, marketing, or a related field from an accredited college or university.
Any work-related experience resulting in acceptable proficiency levels in the above Minimum Qualifications is an acceptable substitute for the above-specified education and experience requirements.
Qualifications
The Executive Vice President, Membership Engagement and ACSE will be a sales and outcomes-oriented leader, possessing a strong track record and diverse skillset to build and lead a momentous strategy to increase Scouting’s membership. This leader will bring vision, gravitas, passion, and high energy to generate new and innovative approaches to growing the scouting movement, with an achievable goal of 2,000,000 members by 2028.
Minimum of 10 years of experience in sales, marketing, and strategic leadership, with a proven track record of building and leading successful growth strategies. Experience in a non-profit environment, particularly with youth organizations or volunteer management, is highly desirable. Specific experience in developing and executing national campaigns, managing teams, building partnerships, and working with diverse stakeholders is crucial
The successful candidate will also have a proven track record at the senior level of the following, or similar strategic leadership experience:
- Strong and authentic appreciation for the mission. Scouting experience is a plus.
- Strong leadership abilities and strategic thinking to create, plan, share, and implement a new and diversified membership growth strategy for the regions. Outreach to diverse communities is an essential requirement to meet our youth expansion goals.
- A successful track record of attracting, developing, motivating and retaining a high performing, team-oriented staff, as well as ability to partner with stakeholders and lead through influence.
- Past success in leading a national sales campaign is a plus.
- Change management skills and action orientation, along with the ability to thrive in a complex, fast-paced, and dynamic environment.
- Charisma and an ability to collaborate and motivate others.
- An ability to “close the deal.”
- Entrepreneurial thought leadership with the ability to recognize future trends and new opportunities.
- An established network and partnership building experience (or skills/acumen to ensure success).
- The ability to understand and manage successful marketing and branding initiatives in today’s rapidly changing business environment, including “train the trainer” curriculum.
- Experience leveraging social media and technology to build engagement.
- Experience interfacing with diverse C-suite leaders, ideally with established regional relationships.
- An ability to strengthen brand development and management processes.
- A thorough understanding of principles involved in business planning, budgetary delivery and oversight, and management of people and resources.
- Experience working with volunteers.
- Measurement experience and the ability to leverage analysis and big data to drive results.
- Political savviness; a proven track record of building and sustaining relationships with internal and external stakeholders and constituents.
- Outstanding listening and communication skills; clearly, effectively, and persuasively articulates to all levels, both in oral and written communication.
- Impeccable professional ethics, integrity, transparency, and accountability in all actions.
- Must pass a criminal history background check.
Physical Requirements
- Visual acuity to read information from computer screens, forms, and other printed materials and information.
- Hearing acuity for verbal communication, conversations, face-to-face interactions, and/or responses via telephone and telephone systems.
- Speaking ability for general communication and ability to clearly enunciate in conversations with others.
This is primarily a sedentary office classification although standing in work areas and walking between work areas may be required. Finger dexterity is needed to access, enter, and retrieve data using a computer keyboard or calculator and to operate standard office equipment; vision to read printed materials and a computer screen; hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone. Positions in this classification occasionally bend, stoop, kneel, reach, push, and pull drawers open and closed to retrieve and file information. Employees must possess the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull materials and objects weighing up to 25 pounds.
