Senior Development Director
Position Overview
In partnership with the Director of Development, the Sr. Development Director is fully responsible for leadership of three Development Directors and a Development Assistant as well as building, promoting, and managing specific fundraising programs of the council including, but not limited to, leadership of the Annual Campaign Fundraising. This position is responsible for coaching and directing staff and volunteers related to each of these programs.
Responsibilities
- Staff Leadership: Provide leadership to three Development Directors and one Development Assistant – with responsibilities in James West, Special Events, Mid-level Gifts, Matching Gifts, Donor Stewardship Communications, Direct Mail Solicitations, Unit Level Donor Solicitations and Other Workplace Giving.
- Annual Campaign: Work with Council Annual Campaign Chairs and Committees to organize, plan and create AC support materials and training for the Annual Campaign. Recruit and train a team of volunteers to reach yearly stated Annual Campaign goal by September. Identify and recruit AC team chairs as needed. Also, responsible for overall strategic planning of matching gifts and workplace giving, sustaining donors, direct mail donors and donor solicitations, communications and stewardship.
- Annual Team Portfolio: Serve as a relationship manager to 25-50 key donors. Utilize the “Moves Management Process” to maintain and enhance the experience of select donors and prospect donors within your portfolio. Serve as lead staff for the education, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of select mid-level donors and prospects through personal visits and multiple marketing approaches.
- Relationship Building: Embrace and carry to others the philosophy and mission of Northern Star Council by perceiving the development department as a part of the larger picture and by sustaining a personal commitment to the goals of the council as a whole. Network in the community to help identify Scouting advocates and new relationships, volunteers and donors.
Secondary Responsibilities:
- Uphold council/BSA policies and present a positive and professional attitude and image at Base Camp and while representing the position at official functions away from the office.
- Provide team support for event and other areas, including input and assistance to Development staff, related staff, and volunteers in the planning, coordination and implementation of the council’s fundraising campaigns and events. Cultivate relationships with volunteers; attend council-level meetings.
- Keep informed about new financial development techniques.
- Be knowledgeable of the power structure of Northern Star Scouting’s territory and work to effectively harness it.
- Maintain record and file systems as appropriate for specific areas of responsibility.
- Update donor and event contact management systems and archive files.
- Provide regular and meaningful reports to staff or volunteers regarding assignments.
- Maintain confidentiality of information in dealing with donors, committee, Board of Directors and staff.
- Become active within the community. Develop relationships that will produce resources for Scouting.
- Carry out any and all additional responsibilities as assigned from time to time by the Director of Development.
Education
Minimum of a four-year bachelor’s degree.
Qualifications
Minimum of 3-5 years of building/ managing annual campaign program, proven record securing and cultivating $5,000+ gifts or equivalent. 1-2 years of experience with donor communications; sales management and campaign experience. Ability to develop and write solicitation and grant proposals. Proven volunteer recruitment skills. Ability to interface with Northern Star Scouting leaders, team members and board members, Scouting volunteers and top corporate and community leaders. Business/management experience, including budget, supervisory, and program development/implementation. Organizational skills and proven ability to work with minimal supervision.
Software: Must have working knowledge of computers (Windows, Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint). Will be trained in eTapestry and My.Scouting. Utilizes computer software to construct, manipulate data and draw conclusions. Intermediate keyboarding skills are needed.
Interpersonal skills: Must be able to work independently as well as cooperatively and demonstrate a positive attitude. Must enjoy working with people and be an active team player. Effective interpersonal communications and customer service skills are needed to work with co-workers and volunteers. Ability to communicate plans effectively to staff and provide leadership to plan development. Provide indirect staff leadership and development expertise to non-fundraising staff.

Salary or Salary Range: Up to $90,000/year, depending on qualifications.
