Position Overview

As our next Outdoor Program Director, you will play a crucial role in shaping the future of Scouting in our community. This role is more than managing programs—it’s about creating life-changing experiences that inspire young people to become the leaders of tomorrow. You’ll be a driving force behind multiple volunteer committees delivering innovative, safe, and memorable outdoor adventures that leave a lasting impact on Scouts, volunteers, and families. Through your leadership, our outdoor programs will uphold the highest standards of safety and quality while also deepening connections to nature, adventure, and service. Responsibilities
  • Program Leadership: Lead the development and execution of year-round outdoor programs at the Hawk Mountain Scout Reservation and throughout our community, including summer camps, day camps, and facility utilization.
  • Volunteer Engagement and Development: Help identify, recruit, and train volunteer talent to expand our reach and service to youth, ensuring a vibrant and sustainable volunteer network.
  • Budget Management: Create and manage the annual program budget (of $1M), ensuring fiscal responsibility and alignment with council objectives.
  • Compliance: Ensure that all outdoor programs meet BSA accreditation standards and local/state regulations.
  • Staff Management: Recruit, train, and supervise seasonal camp staff, ensuring the delivery of high-quality programs.
  • Cultivate Community Relations: Build and maintain relationships with community organizations, securing opportunities for Scouts to participate in external events and programs and increasing the utilization of the camp property to community and business organizations
  • Strategic Planning: Contribute to the council’s long-range strategic planning, ensuring that outdoor programs align with the council’s mission and goals.
  • Innovation: Pioneer new outdoor initiatives such as mobile programs for schools, community outreach efforts, and special events that broaden the scope and accessibility of Scouting.
  • Safety and Compliance: Ensure the health, safety, and compliance standards are maintained at all council facilities and during all outdoor activities.
Education
  • A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university is strongly preferred.
  • However, we also value significant life and work experiences that demonstrate your ability to lead, manage outdoor programs, and make a meaningful impact in the Scouting community.
Qualifications
  • Experience: 3+ years of successful experience in outdoor programming, camp management, or related fields.
  • Skills: Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with a demonstrated ability to build positive relationships and lead diverse volunteer and staff teams. Strong organizational and time management skills, with a successful project management track record.
  • Flexibility: Adaptable and comfortable working in a fast-paced, dynamic environment where priorities may shift rapidly to serve our youth and volunteers best.
  • Licenses: A valid state driver’s license is required.
  • Personality Traits: Motivated, innovative, and results-driven with a strong passion for youth development. Able to inspire and lead a diverse team while maintaining a collaborative and inclusive environment.
  • Preferred Knowledge: Proficiency with Microsoft Office tools (Required). Familiarity with Scouting resources and tools (e.g., my.scouting, Scoutbook, BlackPug) preferred.
Licenses

Must hold a valid driver’s license and have access to a reliable vehicle for program-related travel.

He is the founder of Caljet, one of the largest independent motor fuels terminals in the U.S. He has served the Arizona Petroleum Marketers Association, Teen Lifeline, and American Heart Association. A triathlete who has completed hundreds of races, Alexander has also mentored the women’s triathlon team at Arizona State University.

He has more than 40 years of experience in the oil, gas, and energy fields, including serving as a president, owner, and CEO. Adams has also received multiple service awards from the Texas Alliance of Energy Producers.
