Chief Scout Executive Roy Williams Recognized as Distinguished
University of Texas at Arlington Alumni
Irving, Texas (Oct. 10, 2005) - The Boy Scouts of America's Chief
Scout Executive Roy L. Williams has received the University of Texas at
Arlington's (UTA) Distinguished Alumni Award. Williams was honored by the Alumni
Association at UTA's Distinguished Alumni Gala on Saturday, Oct. 8 for his
exceptional achievements and leadership.
The Distinguished Alumni Award is the highest honor given by the University
and Alumni Association to a graduate. The annual Distinguished Alumni Gala
recognizes outstanding alumni for their individual achievements, contributions
to their industries professions and service to UT Arlington.
Since 2000, Williams has served as the Chief Scout Executive of the Boy
Scouts of America. As the top professional leader of the nation's largest youth
service organization, Chief Williams directs the administration of the
organization which delivers Scouting to approximately four million youth
nationwide. He has successfully led the Boy Scouts of America's Good Turn for
America national service initiative introduced in 2003.
The Good Turn for America program encourages Scouts nationwide to continue
doing "Good Turns" daily in their respective communities. The program is a
partnership with some of the nation's most respected service organizations,
including The Salvation Army, Habitat for Humanity and the American Red Cross.
The program aims to fight hunger and homelessness, while teaching the habits of
healthy living.
Prior to his current position Chief Williams was a Boy Scouts of America
district executive, finance director and local council scout executive. He has
also served as Boy Scout Division director and Western Region regional director.
A 1971 UT Arlington Alumnus, Chief Williams has a bachelor's degree in business
administration and is a veteran of the United States Air Force.
