Sea Scouts at the America's Cup

Two Sea Scouts have been chosen to travel to New Zealand for the final portion of the 2003 America's Cup race.

SEA SCOUTS TO ATTEND 2003 AMERICA'S CUP RACE IN NEW ZEALAND

Nicolette Ward A. Frank Thomas

Sea Scouts Nicolette Ward and A. Frank Thomas have been selected to attend the 2003 America's Cup sailing championship race in New Zealand. The America's Cup Sailing Championship race is the number one sailing event in the world. Nicolette is a member of Ship 936 in the Orange County Council, Costa Mesa, California. She has earned the Sea Scout Quartermaster Award.

Frank is a member of Ship 1 in the Southeast Louisiana Council in the New Orleans, Louisiana, area. He is working on his Quartermaster Award. Frank graduated first in his class at Sea Scout Advanced Leadership Training, a weeklong, hands-on leadership course on the water in June 2002. Nicolette and Frank will spend three weeks in New Zealand, expenses paid by Bill Koch, 1992 America's Cup winner and a member of the national Sea Scout Committee. They will be volunteers working with the New Zealand Coastguard and the Buckland's Beach Yacht Club.

Attending the race with the Scouts are Sea Scout adult leaders Cynthia Johnson, Ship 502, Houston, Texas, and Chris Fox, Newport Beach, California.

Look for them on television as they patrol the race course.

Sea Scouting is a program segment of Venturing, which is a coeducational program offered to young adults between the ages of 14 and 21. Sea Scouting is organized to promote better citizenship and to improve members' boating skills and knowledge through instruction and practice in water safety, boating skills, outdoor, social, and service experiences, and knowledge of our maritime heritage.
